The family run business McCauley Woodfuels are holding an open afternoon on Friday 3rd May from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm, McCauleys have been pioneers in the development of wood fuel processes since they were first certified to the national Wood Fuel Quality Assurance (WFQA) scheme in 2012. Set up by father and son team Brian and Kenny, the McCauleys supply woodchip and firewood sourced from local forests for customers throughout the region, while providing local employment and supporting the financial benefits to local forest owners.
Since the early 1990s the state and private land owners have invested heavily in forestry, and in recent years we are now seeing many privately planted crops reaching maturity and being harvested, producing high value materials such as sawlog and stakewood, as well as a proportion of wood fuels, especially from earlier thinnings. Harvesting, transport and sawmilling operations all create employment, as well as producing building materials and sustainable products to rival materials such as plastic, steel and concrete.
Noel Gavigan of the Irish Bioenergy Association has noted “we visited Austria, north Italy and Slovenia on many occasions over recent years and saw how local farmers all have a forestry holding and it is integrated into their normal farm activities, local co-operatives assist in forest management as well as sawmilling and processing smaller material into woodchip and firewood for local markets. They have a history of this going back through the generations and this level of usage is beginning to emerge in Ireland.” McCauley Wood Fuels are a prime example of how forestry is providing both local employment sustainably and locally sourced renewable fuels, which all brings added value to the local economy.
The Wood Fuel Quality Assurance scheme is funded by the Department of Agriculture and managed by the Irish Bioenergy Association. Members of the scheme such as McCauleys have their wood fuels certified to ISO international standards.
