REFIT Scheme Officially Launched
A new Government support mechanism for renewable electricity projects has come into effect from the 1st of May. The scheme is called Renewable Energy Feed In Tariff (ReFIT) and is operated by the Department of Communications Marine and Natural resources. The programme provides support of €119m to renewable energy projects over a fifteen year period.

The new fixed price tariffs are:
1. Large wind energy (> 5 MW) 5.7 cent/kWh
2. Small wind energy (< 5 MW) 5.9 cent/kWh
3. Biomass (landfill gas) 7.0 cent/kWh
4. Hydro and other biomass technologies 7.2 cent/kWh

Greener Homes Scheme Launched

SEI has introduced a 5-year grant support programme for Residential Renewable Heating systems, called the 'Greener Homes Scheme'. The grants include support for wood chip and pellet boilers and stoves for domestic homes. The Irish Bioenergy Association clearly welcomes this development and hopes it will lead to high quality installations and sow the seeds for a stable long-term growth in the domestic wood energy market.

European Parliament Energy Committee calling for Green Heat Targets

The energy committee of the European Parliament has adopted a report that recommends countries set ambitious targets to increase the share of green heat technologies by 2020.  The Committee on Industry, Research & Energy adopted the Initiative Report on Renewable Heating & Cooling presented by German member of Parliament, Mechtild Rothe.
