EU Energy Council Agrees 2020 Biofuel Target

At a European Energy Council Meeting in Brussels on 15th February, it was decided to mandate Member States to provide 10% of their road transport fuels in the form of biofuel by 2020.  The following caveat was added: ".. to be introduced in a cost-efficient way. The binding character of this target is appropriate subject to production being sustainable, second-generation biofuels becoming commercially available and the Fuel Quality Directive being amended accordingly to allow for adequate levels of blending."

 
New Biofuel Obligations Announced for 2009

A broad welcome is given to the surprise announcement by the Minister for Natural Resources that he is introducing a biofuels obligation which will ensure that biofuels represent 5.75% of Ireland's transport fuel market by 2009. The minister announced a new 2020 target of 10% market penetration of biofuels which would also be delivered by the Biofuels Obligation.

Energy Crops Eligible for REPS

The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Mary Coughlan T.D., has confirmed that REPS farmers are not excluded from the new Bioenergy Scheme for Willow and Miscanthus under which an establishment grant and annual premium are paid.
