Germany announces an increase in biofuel contribution to transport sector
The German Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Agriculture announced that the Government will increase the amount of biofuels to be used in Germany's transport sector from 5 to 10 percent.

The ministers agreed on the outline of the plans during a Roundtable on Biofuels with the German automakers, the oil industry, farmers and biofuel producers. According to agriculture minister Horst Seehofer and environment minister Sigmar Gabriel, all actors agreed on increasing the target to 10%, with the auto makers pledging to make new technologies available to accomodate biofuels.

Importantly, the actors were unanimous in asking biofuels and feedstocks to be produced in a sustainable way. A growing share of Germany's biodiesel comes from imported feedstocks. The German government is therefore, working on developing a set of sustainability criteria for imported fuels. For example it would be unsound to see the CO2-advantage of biofuels being negated by the destruction of rainforests in the tropics.

Mayo 100 MW CHP Solid Fuel Power Plant Gets Planning
A €140million Combined Heat and Power plant is to go ahead at the former Asahi site at Killala, Co. Mayo. The plant will be a 100MW mixed fuel combined heat and power plant and will utilise available wood from North West forests to the maximum, providing a market for the thinnings from the newly developed private forests. It will also purchase peat and wood from local fast rotation crops. A small percentage of coal will be used to complete the fuel mix. This planned local purchase of feedstock alone is estimated to be worth €20 million per annum.
