The first ever edition of the BRC Energy and Commodities Bulletin has been published. It endeavours to help all those who wish to keep abreast of trends in energy research, prices and availability.
"As Ireland tries to unlock the grip that fossil fuels has had on supplying our energy needs, real debate is needed on our energy future and facts should form the basis of those debates. UCD’s Bio Resources Research Centre (BRC) along with other bodies in particular Teagasc have long been researching the role of alternative energy sources, they have built up a core understanding of the various technologies that exist. Unfortunately, much of the research conducted is published in scientific journals far from the eyes of those who could best use it; Therefore, another role of this bulletin is to make available current research conducted by the BRC and and wider research circles to those who can best see commercial scope behind the facts and figures" For more information.

Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) has launched an Incubator Programme for emerging green business opportunities in the sustainable energy sector. The Programme is intended to encourage innovation in the sustainable energy sector, by supporting new small ventures focusing on clean energy technologies and services in Ireland. It main purpose is to bridge the financing gaps that often hamper the growth of small companies. Venture support is available towards incubation fees and activities including the development and mentoring of management and training.
Under the first phase of the programme SEI has awarded financial supports to four sustainable energy companies. These are:
Renewable Power Generation which operates wind powered electricity plants on industrial sites and resells the electricity back to the site owner.
AirEn Services Ltd which is engaged in the development of alternate uses for on site wind generated electricity such as CCTV camera systems for remote sites. GPS monitoring equipment for fright containers, lighting for public spaces and motor-ways etc.
ApEnvEcon which provides technical advisory services in environmental economic analysis, energy and environmental modelling, policy instruments, policy analysis and evaluation, and in the areas of sustainable energy use, transportation, air quality, and climate change.
Eirzyme which has developed a proprietary enzyme technology, offering the potential to make the production of ethanol from renewable biomass feedstocks commercially viable. This project is particularly relevant to our members.

Dublin,3rd September 2007
Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan T.D announced that the Greener Homes scheme has fulfilled its initial objectives, surpassed its targets ahead of schedule and fully committed its budget allocation. Since its inception 16,000 grants have been awarded. There has been a dramatic increase in renewable technology suppliers and a ten-fold expansion in the number of renewable energy products available on the market. This August, approved applications reached the €47 million five-year allocation for the scheme. Phase I is, therefore, now complete and applications under this scheme will no longer be accepted. Announcing the revised Scheme Minister Ryan said , "Greener Homes has fulfilled its objectives. Rather than concluding the Scheme, however, I have decided that a new Phase with revised terms and conditions is necessary to continue this good work. I will be securing additional funding for this new Phase via the Supplementary Estimates process when the Dáil resumes. The additional funding will also allow Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) to fund similar energy grants for lower-income housing, school and community schemes and the roll-out of other innovative heating technologies.
