IrBEA welcomes BGE’s report on ‘The Future of Renewable Gas in Ireland'
The Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA) supports and welcomes the report produced by Bord Gáis Eireann (BGE), in association with Ernst & Young and UCC, entitled ‘The Future of Renewable Gas in Ireland'. The findings of the report suggest that 7.5% of Ireland's natural gas demand could be met by renewable gas produced from organic materials such as grass silage, energy crops and organic wastes.

The Association is pleased that a leading, state owned energy provider is exploring and embracing the potential for biogas production and feels that the involvement of such an organisation in the biogas sector will encourage the development of this valuable, yet under-exploited, natural and indigenous resource. The development of the biogas sector will result in the creation of a substantial number of ‘green economy' jobs as well as making a significant contribution to national targets and objectives in the areas of renewable energy, climate change and waste management. However, this can only be ensured through the development and implementation of focussed national policy that addresses and supports all of the technical and financial aspects of biogas generation.

Energy Minister Eamon Ryan has announced a range of Renewable Energy Feed in Tariffs
The Irish Bioenergy Association broadly welcomes the announcement of support for Renewable Electricity from Biomass.
Energy Minister Eamon Ryan has announced a range of Renewable Energy Feed in Tariffs for electricity produced from Biomass sources, the guaranteed electricity price of up to 15c/kWh is broadly welcomed by the Irish Bioenergy Association (IrBEA).

Ireland currently lags behind many of its European counterparts with regards to support for a home grown energy industry. IrBEA members strongly believe that building a bioenergy industry in Ireland will provide real and long term economic growth - not only providing employment, but reducing Irelands costs of importing fossil energy (approx €6.5 Billion a year). The offer price for electricity from biomass of up to 15c/kWh, is close to that offered in other countries such as the UK (17c/kWh), Italy (22-28c/kWh) and Germany (6c-30c/kWh, depending on feedstock). At the levels announced we expect industry development to proceed in Ireland. We are still assessing the exact impact of the announcement and note that many farm-scale systems will not be viable at this level.

IrBEA and its members have made numerous representations to the Minister and continue to work closely with DCENR on bioenergy policy development. We are heartened to see this improved support to the industry. With a guaranteed index-linked prices now available for 15 years, biomass energy plants such as anaerobic digesters and wood-fired heat and power generation (CHP) systems are assured of an income stream and can have greater access to bank finance. This will also promote the replacement of peat in a number of our power plants with sustainable biomass.
